THE TURTLE IV

THE ULTIMATE INTERNATIONAL BACKROAD TRAVEL & CAMPING VEHICLE

GENERAL HISTORY:

The Turtle IV was designed and built to safely transport us around the World, and more specifically, across Siberia in the winter, with expected temperatures below –90F. Its design and construction have been an ongoing project for seventeen years. That may seem old. It’s not! Based on a 1992 Ford F-350 one-ton 4X4 pick-up, every system has been modified to reflect the final goal of reliability. Cost was never a factor. Our sole responsibility in choosing each piece of equipment was simply to find the best!!

During all modifications, we were able to maintain the underlying basic reliability of the Ford F series truck and its international availability of parts and service. Through our comprehensive maintenance program, all systems have been kept in new or better condition--- Expedition Ready!!

High Blue Book on this truck today is about $5,700.00

A comparably equipped stock 2009 F-350 goes for about $48,910.00

ENGINE:

The engine in The Turtle IV is an all-new Franklin Power 7.3 Liter Turbo Diesel. It was dyno tested at the factory. It was installed by experienced diesel mechanics at Browns Valley RV Performance and has been thoroughly checked by the expert technicians at Ken Imler Diesel Performance in Sacramento . During installation, all mounts and hoses were replaced if any sign of wear could be seen.

An estimated cost of a new 7.3 L Turbo Diesel is $10,000. $12,000 installed..

Current value over Blue Book: $8,000

FUEL:

Stock diesel fuel system has been modified with a military Stanadyne injection pump to handle jet fuel, and by adding a Racor auxiliary fuel filter/water separator/fuel heater. A Transfer Flow fuel vent system has been installed to allow large nozzles and high-pressure hoses to be used. This engine will burn diesel #1, diesel #2, low sulfur diesel, ultra-low sulfur diesel, kerosene, jet fuel, or any combination.

Estimated cost: $1,200, installed.

Current value over Blue Book: $800

EXHAUST:

A new high-performance Banks mandrel-bent exhaust system was installed with the new engine.

Estimated cost: $2,000, installed.

Current value over Blue Book: $800

COOLING:

Standard towing package. The heavy-duty radiator was completely reconditioned and the clutch fan was replaced when the new engine was installed..

Estimated value over Blue Book: $500

ELECTRICAL:

Two Optima sealed batteries are kept fully charged by a new Link-Arc 190 amp alternator, routed through a Link-Arc Power Tool which can supply 110 AC power, is capable of full-service welding, and can function as a quick-charge battery charger. A twin solenoid battery cutoff switch sends full charge to the three Optima Yellow Top deep cycle batteries in the camper. The Optima Yellow Top feed numerous 12-volt DC outlets in the truck and camper, and also produce 110 AC via a Statpower ProWatt 600 watt inverter.

Approximate cost for complete system: $3,000.

Current value over Blue Book: $2,500

TRANSMISSION & TRANSFER CASE:

Both the transmission and transfer case are original. There has been no reason to open them up. They are frequently drained and refilled with Red Line high performance lubricants. A new clutch and throw-out bearing have been installed. Where possible, gearboxes are equipped with remote breathers attached to K&N filters.

Current value over Blue Book: $200

DIFFERENTIALS:

Both front and rear differentials are equipped with ARB Air Locking Differential systems. Air is supplied by the Ready Air system. Cost of both differentials, installed is approximately $4,000. Differentials are connected to remote breathers attached to K&N filters. Both front and rear differentials have heavy duty Mag-Hytec covers with dipsticks and magnetic plugs.

Estimated cost: $4,000, installed.

Current value over Blue Book: $4,000

DRIVE LINES:

Drivelines are regularly overhauled by Central Drive Line Service in Sacramento , CA . All U-joints are Spicer lubeable types. All yolks, slip tubes and CV joints are regularly replaced at the slightest sign of wear, a function of Expedition Ready maintenance, and the advantage of full product sponsorship by companies such as Timken, Spicer and Federal Mogul.

Current value over Blue Book: normal maintenance-Plus

BRAKES:

Both front and rear brakes have recently been completely overhauled. The entire brake system has been flushed with DOT 3 fluid. Front calipers and rotors have been replaced with new Raybestos units.

Current value over Blue Book: normal maintenance-Plus

AXLES:

All bearings and seals have been replaced. Front spindles and U-joints have been replaced. Inner front axle seals have been replaced. Front hubs are repacked on a regular basis. Locking hubs are all new.

Current value over Blue Book: normal maintenance-Plus

WHEELS AND TIRES:

Wheels are ALCOA forged aluminum one-piece wheels. Tires are new Goodyear LT 285/75R/16/D MT/Rs. All tires are fitted with the SmarTire remote wireless temperature and pressure monitoring system.

Current value over Blue Book: $1,800

SUSPENSION:

All spring packs are custom made and installed by National Spring in El Cajon , CA . A special dual shock set-up was designed by Ted Kendall Engineering in Lakeside , CA. Shocks are Rancho XL 9000 adjustables. With the shocks adjusted to their lightest setting, a reasonable ride is obtained while greatly reducing heat build-up, a shock's primary enemy.

Current value over Blue Book: $2,000

STEERING:

The complete steering system has been replaced, including all new MOOG ball joints, tie rod ends, sleeves, the center link, and the drag link. Original equipment steering shaft was replaced with a Borgeson Vibration Reducer Upgrade Shaft, which is designed with two needle bearing U-joints and an intermediate telescoping shaft. We also installed an AGR Rock Ram System. Originally developed for competition rock-crawlers, the Rock Ram System increases steering force by 100%. It is designed to provide pure turning power for both off-road and highway maneuvering. The system includes an AGR P-series Super Pump, which develops 1500 PSI and will flow 4-GPM, a 30% increase over stock. We also replaced our stock steering box with the AGR premium remanufactured steering box. The AGR box's individual components are tested. The gearbox is ported and other proprietary modifications are made to the housing and valve assembly to provide increased flow capacities, allowing the box to react quicker when used with the AGR Ford Super Pump. The hydraulic Ram cylinder, which takes its power from the AGR steering box, is double sealed and was developed specifically for this purpose.

The truck is equipped with a hand-stitched Ford leather steering wheel.

Current value over Blue Book: $1,500

HORNS:

Twin Apex stainless steel air horns powered by the Ready Air holding tank. Air horns can be switched off from the cab when only factory horns are desired.

Current value over Blue Book: $400

BUMPERS:

The Turtle IV is fitted with custom Rickard compartment bumpers. The front unit features two sealed locking storage boxes, a full wrap-around bull-guard, two trailer hitch sockets, mounts for auxiliary PIAA lights, and a two-speed 12,000 lb MegaWinch electric winch.

The rear features a class 3 load leveling hitch, a Warn 8,000 lb electric winch, and a swing-away Rickard rack which holds a Max Forest tool, a Hi-Lift Jack, a shovel, three NATO-style metal Jerri cans, one fuel and two for water, and the spare tire and wheel. Full electrical hook-up for trailer towing wiring harness is built in to the bumper. Unfortunately, Mr. Rickard is deceased, so these custom bumpers are, for practical purposes, not replaceable.

Bumpers have recently been re-conditioned and painted with PPG Emeron.

Bumpers------------$4,000
Warn winch--------$700
MegaWinch--------$1,300

THE CAMPER

The Four Wheel Pop-Up Keystone Camper fitted to The Turtle IV was built in California to our specifications. All stress points were gusseted and double welded. It has been modified and repaired by the factory, and recently received a complete new roof and sideliner. A new Dometic 12-volt/110-volt refrigerator was installed. We have recently redone all the counter tops, curtains, and basically anything that was not in “expedition ready” condition. All storage compartments have custom latches to keep them closed on rough roads.

The camper features include:

• Four Wheel Camper Winter kit.
• 600-watt Statpower 12 volt DC to 110-volt AC inverter.
• LiteCo fluorescent lights.
• Fantastic roof vent.
• Two Jensen 12-volt auxiliary fans.
• Everpure two-stage water filter with two outlets.
• Heavy duty Shurflo water pump with Shurflo accumulator tank.
• Two-way Dometic compressor refrigerator.
• Three Optima Yellow Top deep cycle sealed batteries.
• Full Yakima sports roof rack.
• Two Packasport storage pods with custom handles and double locks.
• Full length A&E Trans-Awn 2000 awning.
• Two PIAA flood/back-up lights wired to the truck transmission with manual override.
• Keyed-alike auxiliary locks on all outside compartments.
• Secondary dead-bolt on the door.
• Lexan dual-pane windows.
• Three-layer thermal curtains.
• Hunter diesel heater.
• Secondary Hunter heater taking heat from the engine coolant.
• Three-burner stove with cover.
• Stainless steel sink.
• New propane tank. (removable for filling world wide.)
• Thetford Porta Potti.
• External R&M Hot Shower.

The base price of the new Keystone is $12,945.
With normal 12-volt accessories from the factory, it goes up to $18,000.
An estimated cost to replace this camper with all its accessories and modifications we have made would be over $20,000. It seems reasonable, considering the condition and the recent refurbishing done, that $13,000 is a low value to place on the complete package.

THE TOTAL

Estimated Street Replacement Value Over $90,000.00

Asking Price $49,500

Yes, that's a lot of truck. The Turtle IV is obviously not for everyone. But if one seriously considers the amount of time, frustration, experimentation, expense and the pure labor of designing and building anything even close to The Turtle IV-------if one can even imagine the attention to detail which MUST go into the installation of every single component and every single mechanical modification; every wire and nut and bolt;-----well, most people can't. But if they can, then the appreciation of mechanical excellence will clearly reflect the value of this incredibly functional vehicle. This kind of unique reliability and function has its price. Part of that price is over 35 years of experience traveling backroads around the world.

The Turtle IV is not for everyone, but then, there is only one Turtle IV, and The Turtle IV is ready for its next adventure!! The Turtle IV was driven around the World in 1996, 97 & 98. If there is blue sky to add, The Turtle IV is the first---perhaps the only---vehicle to have ever crossed all of Siberia and Russia , ocean to ocean, with the wheels on the ground. Since that epic journey, virtually every mechanical component has been inspected and in most cases, replaced or upgraded. If there is a more proven International Backroad Travel Vehicle and Camper, we don’t know about it. From a sheer reliability standpoint, it far exceeds our new Turtle V. (See the Vehicle Page on our web site, www.TurtleExpedition.com <http://www.TurtleExpedition.com> .)

Aside from the fact that many of the components on The Turtle IV are no longer available, in today’s world of PCMs, computers, diesel particulate filters, catalectic converters, and fly-by-wire vehicles, The Turtle IV stands out for its ultimate reliability. No black boxes. No computers. The windows roll down with a crank, and the doors open with a key, and there is a real cable connecting your foot to the throttle. Any good diesel mechanic in any country could repair any part of this truck’s drivetrain. That is a very clear advantage to the Overland Traveler.

Truthfully, we don’t really want to sell it, but if someone doesn’t come along who will use it for what it was designed for before we depart for our next adventure, The Trans-Eurasian Odyssey and the Silk Road to China, we may offer The Turtle IV for exhibit to the National Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in Reno, Nevada’s National Automobile Museum.
